Visit to Salford Imperial War Museum

This was a really interesting place to start collecting research for my project. I wanted to relate my project to the idea of 'Make do and Mend' which was a government campaign that started during WWII because everything had to be rationed, and new materials were scarce so people were encouraged to make do with what they already had.

I found this 'Chubby Pink Pig from an old vest' toy really interesting. The toy has been designed to be made from a child's old vest. Even children were encouraged to make their own toys out of their own old clothes.

I found that many items were made by soldiers whilst in hospital or whilst they were at war, in order to pass the time. I think that the range of materials is really interesting, like this stuffed dog made out of leather. Leather isn't a very soft fabric, and isn't really something you would use to create a stuffed animal but that must have been all that the soldier who made it had spare at the time and even though this toy was made out of boredom, I think it is really creative; a toy dog is something I would have never associated with war, yet in this museum I saw two! and I like they way different materials can be used to create objects you wouldn't associate them with.

The other toy dog I saw. Made by a soldier out of an old military jacket. This toy looks as though it was intended for comfort, although the fabric looks like it would be a bit itchy.

Hand embroidery by a soldier. This looks like it would have taken ages to complete!
