Self Directed Project

I think that writing my own brief will be really exciting and I am really looking forward to this next term. I'll be able to experiment without any restrictions to develop a project that will be entirely my own. I had already decided what materials I want to experiment with by my first tutorial. I find that I am too precious with materials that I buy, so I thought that for this project I will just use materials from objects I already have, and will probably never use otherwise, such as materials from objects that are broken. Electrical equipment has always fascinated me and since I've had a broken TV in my flat for over a year now, I thought it was the perfect starting point for this project.

My Brief:

The aim of this project is to create a range of experimental designs for interior surfaces or products by using an object that is broken or deemed no longer useful.

The starting point of the project will be to look at artists who practice upcycling and recycling, I will research into the WWII campaign ‘Make Do and Mend’ to see how products can be given a new life. I also want to research and experiment with hard and soft materials, such as glass and fabric, to see how they can work together and complement each other. I want to use the components of the products to create some interesting surface patterns and textures.

My overall aim is to take the idea of creating interior/ product designs forward in a more direct way than my last project by concentrating on surface pattern. I have always been interested in recycling and I don’t like seeing things go to waste, so this project will reflect how much can be achieved with ‘useless’ objects.
